Pick up the filtering capacitor and place it along LM7805. After that, solder the anode of the capacitor to PIN-3 and cathode to the GND plate of LM7805. Now all of the circuitry is done and all that is left is to draw out wires for supplying 5V output from the battery.
So mathematically: This means we should select the transformer with a secondary voltage value equal to 6V (RMS) or at least 10% more than 6V (RMS). From these points, for the 5V DC power supply design, we can select a transformer of current rating 1A and a secondary voltage of 6V (RMS).
So if we want 5 volts, we need at least 7 volts to maintain the steady 5 volts that we want. This power supply will not be able to convert from lower volts to 5. So once our battery is dead, our project will be too. For this tutorial, we will use a LM7805 (a linear voltage regulator) for our power supply.
A regulator is the integrated circuit used to give a constant output voltage regardless of input voltage changes. I hope you have developed some basic concepts of power supply design. let’s go further with the actual circuit diagram for our specific 5V DC power supply design. Below is the circuit diagram for the said project.
So to make our circuit output anywhere from 5V to 12V we add a voltage divider that varies the voltage on the GND pin. Depending on the position of the potentiometer, the output of the regulating circuit will be between 5V and 12V.
