A large prismatic lithium ion battery is a type of battery that features a square casing, which increases the stability of the battery cells. This unique design makes prismatic cells thin and light and offers the advantage of space saving. The rectangular shape of thin prismatic cells provides better layering than cylindrical cells.
A prismatic Lithium-ion battery is made up of many positive and negative electrodes sandwiched together. This type of battery has much less internal resistance, making it suitable for big current discharge. When using a prismatic Li-ion cell for battery packs, it's also easy to expand the pack capacity without adding too many cells in parallel.
The investigated Li-S battery is a long-life type pouch cell with 3.4 Ah rated capacity manufactured by OXIS Energy Ltd. The pouch cell consists of multiple layers of cathodes, polymeric separators and anodes.
