In 2022, the market saw a record 800 MWh of new storage capacity being added. This took the UK’s operational energy storage capacity to 2.4 GW and 2.6 GWh, spread across more than 160 sites. You would think that is plenty, but the market is just getting started.
The graphic above shows the built capacity of energy storage in the UK by project size by year where 2022 deployment levels exceeded the 2021 annual installed capacity of 617MWh. The first major utility-scale battery storage project was energised in 2017 – a 50MW/25MWh project in Pelham, developed and owned by Statera Energy.
The total installed capacity of utility-scale storage is now approaching 1.7 GW across 127 sites, with 446 MW of utility-scale energy storage installed in 2021 alone. The average size of utility-scale energy storage sites has also increased: the average project size in 2017 was less than 6 MW: in 2021, the average project size was 45 MW.
So far, the most common size for energy storage sites has been 50MW (although sites are now being planned larger). However, battery storage capacity tends to be smaller when co-located with solar and other renewables. The planned capacity is becoming increasingly dominated by large-scale projects.
A total of 170 battery storage projects came online in 2022, totalling 1.9GW capacity (source: LCP Delta). Of these, nearly 85 per cent were in four European markets, namely: the UK, Ireland (328MW), Germany (226MW) and France (224MW), bringing the total for European g rid-scale BESS capacity to 5GW.
