View moreChina’s battery and carmakers have united as part of a government-led drive to build a supply chain for solid-state batteries by 2030, writes Nikkei’s Shunsuke Tabeta.
Industry bodies estimate that there are roughly 50 Chinese EV battery groups producing in the world’s largest car market, leading to a survival game that is set to intensify as they face fierce competition for technology and stricter government regulations.
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in June finalised revised guidelines for the country’s lithium-ion battery industry, which set higher standards for energy intensity, power density, cycle life and other battery specifications.
Nissan Motor and Honda Motor are also competing to develop solid-state batteries, and commercialising the technology would be a boon for Japanese automakers, which are trailing China’s BYD and Tesla of the US in global EV sales. But Japan’s auto giants are not the only ones working on this “game-changing” innovation.
China also wants to add battery cathode technology to its list of controlled exports, according to a notice published Thursday by the Commerce Ministry soliciting public comment, on top of the proposed restrictions on technology related to producing lithium and gallium.
If approved, as is likely, the new additions are expected to form a future round of export controls imposed by China on a slew of critical materials and the technology needed to produce them, which are crucial to manufacturing semiconductors and EV batteries.
