Must be efficient enough to satisfy the fundamental battery charging needs.
This is a small-scale prototype PV (PhotoVoltaics) project before making a decent and practically useful home solar panel system later. Therefore, this is the testing purpose of basic circuits made for understanding the operational scheme of a solar cell.
These solar cells should be able to charge one 1.2 volt, battery, or two 1.2 volt batteries in series at a rate of 20 mA for 200 mAh battery, 30 mA for a 300 mAh battery, or 60 mA for a 600 mAh battery. The charging circuit for these batteries is simple, a solar cell connected to a diode then connected to a NiCad battery.
In the circuit above, the current from the solar cell flows through D1 to charge the Li-ion battery. When there is less sunlight, the higher voltage from the battery cannot flow back to the solar cell. Because there is a D1 blocking it, the current can flow only one way. The energy in the battery is stored and gradually increases until it is full.
Splitting power works for direct solar installations and solar systems with a battery. However, build them slightly differently. When you use a battery and solar charge controller, the output voltage is a stable 12V or 24V. If all your devices run on 12V or 24V, dividing power can happen without any DC-DC converter.
