China dependency Europe already relies on China for battery technology, said Guido Cozzi, an economist at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. “It is not too late, but I think they should act pretty fast, because China is moving very fast in this sector,” Cozzi told VOA.
China’s dominance in the battery market is staggering. According to SNE Research, more than half of all electric car batteries built in the world come from Chinese companies, with CATL alone accounting for over one-third of global production. And it’s not just about factories in China anymore; Chinese firms have set up shop in Europe too.
Total Chinese investment in Europe has dropped sharply in the last decade, but battery plants have been a bright spot. Instead of acquiring existing European companies, which can attract more regulatory scrutiny, large Chinese firms like CATL have built new facilities, often with the help of local government funds.

The country’s rapid expansion — its cell production capacity is already much higher than global EV demand — has depressed prices, raising the bar for new entrants.
They include South Korea’s LG Energy Solution. Its battery plant in Wrocław, Poland is currently Europe’s biggest producer of lithium batteries for passenger and commercial vehicles, with a current annual production capacity equal to 86 GWh and a goal to reach a maximum of 90 GWh by 2025.
