Battery plant technology refers to the production of battery systems or packs, which are commonly called batteries in electric or hybrid vehicles. These systems consist of battery modules and additional components such as electronics, cooling, and protective devices.
In many ways, these manufacturing plants are like other large-scale manufacturing facilities. However, large-scale battery manufacturing plants have unique design and construction considerations that can be boiled down into four key challenges. Challenge No. 1: Creating and Maintaining an Ultra-Low Humidity Environment
Battery plants are also different from other types of advanced manufacturing. For instance, clean rooms for semiconductor manufacturing are not dry rooms. They contain 30 times more humidity than the ultra-low requirements for battery plants.
Besides the manufacturing floor, other areas are needed for other functions to operate a battery production plant. They meet production, material supply logistics, security, and personnel requirements and protect against external conditions such as the weather (Figs. 18.6, 18.7)
Small manufacturing plants devoted to manufacturing HEV batteries at less than full-scale production can be converted over several years to flexible plants producing several types of electric-drive batteries at nearly 100% of the plant capacity.
