View moreEach project is sized at 500MW and, once commissioned, will be the largest battery storage projects in Europe. These two projects represent an investment of approximately £800 million. They expand CIP’s UK BESS construction portfolio from one to three projects and make CIP the largest battery storage investor in the United Kingdom.
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, the biggest supplier of battery storage in the UK, on Wednesday said it would start construction on the Coalburn 2 project, in South Lanarkshire, as well as the Devilla project in Fife.
“The construction of Europe’s largest battery systems in South Lanarkshire and Fife is a major step forward for Scotland’s energy transition. These well-placed storage systems will ensure reliable power for homes and businesses, moving us closer to a net-zero future and directly supporting local communities.
Nischal Agarwal, partner at CIP, said: “CIP’s latest investments in Scottish battery energy storage will support the UK’s pursuit of a clean power system by 2030 and delivering a net zero carbon economy by 2050.
Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney said: “The construction of the two largest battery systems in Europe, in South Lanarkshire and Fife, delivered by international investment, is to be welcomed as a significant contribution to the growth of Scotland’s energy transition infrastructure.
The Coalburn projects, adjacent to existing onshore wind facilities, are located on a former coal mine — “a symbolic example of new energy”, said Gillian Martin, acting secretary for net zero and energy.
